This Day In History: David ‘Davy’ Jones Dies

It has been exactly four years since actor, musician, singer, songwriter, author and one-fourth member of the 1960’s band The Monkees, Davy Jones, died of a severe heart attack at the age of 66.

I was fortunate to have met Davy briefly just seven months before he died. I’ve met a few celebrities in my life and have never been starstruck because I know they’re human, just like you and me. The ones who I’ve met have been nice and friendly. However, meeting The Monkees, especially Davy, was different. Maybe it was because The Monkees and their music were a part of my childhood (I wasn’t born when the television series The Monkees first aired, but I watched reruns of it every summer when it aired in syndication) and because he was my first (celeb) crush.

From the music he performed with The Monkees and in his solo career, to portraying himself on an episode of The Brady Bunch, he brought a lot of smiles and happiness to many people, including myself. 😍  🎀  🎢  🎡  πŸ™‚

‘Pretty In Pink’ Turns 30

On Feb. 28, 1986, the film Pretty In Pink was released in theaters across the U.S. The romantic-comedy-drama starred Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Jon Cryer and James Spader.

The story centers around Andie Walsh (played by Ringwald, who was best known for starring in Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club), a high school senior, who lives on the wrong side of the tracks. She falls for Blane McDonough (portrayed by Andrew McCarthy from Mannequin and St. Elmo’s Fire fame), a rich kid from the right side of the tracks. Andie’s good friend Phil ‘Duckie’ Dale (played by Jon Cryer from TV’s Two And A Half Men) has a one-sided crush on Andie and plays it off as a joke in front of her. The relationship between Andie and Blane is a difficult one because both are getting harassed by Blane’s rich circle of friends, including his best friend Steff McKee (played by James Spader from the films Mannequin and Less Than Zero), who has taken an interest in Andie, who thinks Steff is repulsive.

Pretty In Pink has a great soundtrack. The Psychedelic Furs sang the film’s title song, “Pretty In Pink,” followed by Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark’s (OMD) “If You Leave,” Nik Kershaw’s “Wouldn’t It Be Good,” New Order’s “Shellshock” and many more.

The film was directed by Howard Deutch and was written by John Hughes, whose notable credits include Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Uncle Buck and Home Alone.

The Monkees Celebrate 50th Anniversary With New Album And Tour

The Monkees’s 12th album is scheduled for release June 10.

It was announced today that The Monkees will be releasing a new album and will tour this summer to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary.

The album, titled Good Times, is scheduled for release June 10. Band members Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork will tour multiple cities across North America, beginning May 18. Michael ‘Mike’ Nesmith won’t be involved with the new album nor the tour since he currently has multiple projects he’s working on.

Sadly, one missing link will be the absence of front man Davy Jones, who died on Feb. 29, 2012, after having suffered a severe heart attack near his Florida home.

On This Day In History: ‘Donny & Marie’ TV Series Turns 40

It was 40 years ago today that the Donny & Marie variety television series premiered on ABC. Real-life, singing siblings, Donny and Marie Osmond brought their unique blend of style (i.e. collared shirts, purple socks and superb ice-skating moves… yes, it was the mid-1970’s) and witty banter to the small screen, while acting in comedy skits and then performing a song or two.

Every Friday, the siblings welcomed legendary guest stars to their show, including Bob Hope, Desi Arnaz, Andy Williams, Betty White, Olivia Newton-John, Sonny and Cher and many more.

The show ended each week with the duos’ signature song…
