On Oct. 10, 2005, the Anaheim-based band No Doubt released their third album/CD, ‘Tragic Kingdom.’ The first single off the album was “Just A Girl,” then followed by my personal favorite, “Spiderwebs,” then by “Sunday Morning” and “Don’t Speak.”
I’ve never had the opportunity to see the band perform live. Guess I’ll just add this onto my bucketlist!
Forty-nine years ago today, on Sept. 12, 1966, The Monkees comedy series debuted on NBC-TV. The series starred actors Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz, and musicians Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. The show was the creation of film director and producer Bob Rafelson, and film and TV producer Bert Schneider, whose production company Raybert Productions also produced the films Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show. The Monkees television show incorporated an element that (I believe) is lacking in today’s situation comedies, which is music (sorry, but Glee doesn’t count).
The Monkees lasted only two seasons and the band has toured subsequently since 1966. The Monkees became a band despite critics (I’m looking at you Jann Wenner, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, who Monkees fans believe is ‘holding the key’ so they aren’t inducted into the RRHOF) stating they weren’t a band. I’m pretty that if they’ve sold more than 75 million records worldwide and out-sold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined during their peak (not to mention that the show won two Emmy Awards), then they ARE a real band!
On Aug. 8, 1980, the film Xanadu was released in movie theaters nationwide. The romantic, musical, fantasy film starred singer and actress Olivia Newton-John, legendary dancer Gene Kelly and actor Michael Beck. The film’s soundtrack featured music by Newton-John, the British rock band E.L.O., Cliff Richard and the San Francisco-based rock band The Tubes.
Despite the film not being a huge success, the film’s soundtrack was a commercial success worldwide. The song “Magic” was a hit on the U.S. and UK music charts for Newton-John. ๐ถ ๐ฉ ๐ผ
When Duran Duran released the song “Serious” on Oct. 1, 1990, it was during this time when the band consisted of only 3 original members: Simon Le Bon, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes. During this phase, the band was joined by guitarist Warren Cuccurullo (formerly of the band Missing Persons, which he also co-founded) and drummer Sterling Campbell.
Twenty-five-years later, I hope they’ll perform this song on October 2, when my friends and I see them in concert.ย โบ
Last week, Duran Duran released their newest single in five years. The single titled “Pressure Off” features Janelle Monรกe on guest vocals and Niles Rodgers, co-founder andย lead guitarist of the band Chic. The song has been garnered as one of the band’s “best singles in years.” Rodgers and Mark Ronson co-produced the song, as well as the upcoming album.
Duran Duran’s 14th album, Paper Gods, is scheduled for release Sept. 18.
I’m looking forward to seeing Ricki And The Flash, starring Meryl Streep, Rick Springfield, Kevin Kline, Audra McDonald and Mamie Gummer (Streepโs real-life daughter).
Today marks the 20th anniversary of when popular Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez was killed in a senseless act by her fan club president and friend.
Selena left behind a legacy of great music and fans–like myself–will always remember her kindness and beautiful smile. ๐
